S.E. Idaho growers brace for stripe rust pressure

Stripe rust has surfaced in SouthEast Idaho after a cool, damp, spring.

AMERICAN FALLS, Idaho — Cereal crop experts have discovered stripe rust infections in three areas of southeast Idaho and warn cool, wet weather could result in heavy disease pressure this season.

“Last year was a moderate year for stripe rust, but the susceptible varieties were hit hard,” said University of Idaho Extension cereals pathologist Juliet Marshall. “I suspect higher disease pressure this year.”

Marshall said the potentially devastating fungal disease, spread by orange and yellow airborne spores, has been widespread in Logan, Utah, with infections continuing north into Preston, Idaho.

Stripe rust has also been reported in the Seagull Bay area near American Falls Reservoir and in Arbon Valley.

“If it’s locally established very early in the season, there’s a higher chance of it exploding,” Marshall said. “Our (recent) cool, wet weather and cool nights are really good for stripe rust to continue to expand.”

In recent weeks, Marshall said stripe rust has spread into California, Oregon and Washington, and heavier spore loads could soon blow into Idaho.

Marshall said no stripe rust has been found yet in UI cereal variety trials in Aberdeen and Tetonia.

About a month ago, Chris Merrigan, a crop consultant with J.R. Simplot, Co., confirmed stripe rust in a field in the Seagull Bay area near American Falls Reservoir. Merrigan said between 10 and 20 percent of the irrigated field, planted in a resistant wheat variety, was infected.

However, Merrigan said the field was planted in wheat for consecutive seasons, elevating the infection risk, and he doesn’t believe a fungicidal seed treatment was used. Merrigan said spring grain growers still have time to mix fungicides with their herbicide sprays to prevent the spread of stripe rust, and he urges them to do so.

Lonnie Sparks, a crop consultant with CHS Bingham Cooperative, identified stripe rust in downy brome growing between two irrigated spring wheat fields in Arbon Valley. Based on the discovery, Sparks said the grower mixed fungicide with herbicide used on fall wheat fields planted in a susceptible variety, Brundage, and plans to spray fungicides on his spring wheat as well. Sparks also advised the grower to kill the weeds with a mixture of glyphosate herbicide and fungicide.

Marshall said she’s beginning to see cases of root rot in fall wheat fields that were heavily saturated with moisture, as well as pythium outbreaks in spring wheat. Pythium is a water mold that thrives when crops are planted in cool, wet soils, and can cause heavy damage to newly emerging crops with undeveloped root systems.

The good news, Marshall said, is that barley yellow dwarf virus doesn’t appear to be widespread in Idaho this year, as it has been during the past few seasons. Marshall said the virus, which is spread by aphids, has been confirmed in a few fall barley fields in the Murtaugh, Rupert and Burley areas. She believes growers have minimized the spread by delaying planting of fall crops until aphid migrations have passed and by using insecticidal seed treatments.

School Board Minutes / Expenses

ARBON SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
April 11, 2017

The Arbon School Board met on April 11th at 7:00 p.m.  Members Jake Evans, Jessica Ward were present as were Debbie Curry, and clerks Christie Evans and Cheri Evans.

The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jessica to approve the agenda. The motion was moved by Jessica and seconded by Jake to approve the March minutes. The bills were reviewed.  The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jessica to approve them.  The total M & O expenses for April $23,579.92. The school received $12,855.00 from the State Department of Education, $31.35 from property taxes, $21.45 from Federal Forest funds and $149.32 from interest on investments. The school M & O balance is $277,795.68. The Plant Facility received $32.09 from interest the Plant Facility balance is $54,529.98. The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jessica to approve the financial statement.

April 13th is the scheduled date for the school to go into American Falls for school pictures and a field trip after. Also, in April Mike Sanders will be giving a presentation on bullying. The presentation will be April 20th, 2017.

The board members approved for Debbie Curry to attend the Professional Development Tour end of next school year. Also, Debbie announced that Grayson Williams placed 1st place in a state wide photo contest and also received 1st place Honorable mention.  He will be traveling with his family to Boise, Idaho on April 28th to receive the award(s).  The week of April 17th, IRI testing will be conducted. The week of April 24th ISAT testing will start and will run for two weeks if needed.

Only one candidate turned in a petition. Jason Williams is declared the trustee for the Pauline zone. Everyone was in favor for a security camera system for the school.  The equipment has been ordered.

The 2017-2018 school year budget hearing is scheduled for June 13th, 2017 at 7 pm.

The next meeting will be held May 9, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. The motion was moved and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Volunteer Opportunity

Arbon Elementary is looking for some assistance in remodeling our garden spot. We would like it to be a raised garden and a little bigger. We think we would like to use railroad ties.

What we need is some nice strong volunteers that would be willing to pick up and place the ties in their appropriate place. The time and date is flexible. Our Earth Day activities are not until the 19th. We just need someone or someones to go to town and get railroad ties, bring them back to Arbon and place them in a square. We will get the dirt and plant later.

After that the students and teachers would do the rest on our Earth Day activities (19th of May). If anyone is interested in helping please just call me at the school or at home. Thank you!

ARBON SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

March 14, 2017

The Arbon School Board met on March 14 at 7:00 p.m. members Jason Williams, Jake Evans, Jessica Ward were present as were Debbie Curry, Robin Claunch, Christie Evans and clerk Cheri.

The motion was moved by Jessica and seconded by Jake to approve the agenda. The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jessica to approve the minutes. The bills were reviewed.  The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jessica to approve them.  The total M & O expenses for March was $23,564.99. The school received $4,115 from the State Department of Education, $145.41 from interest on investments. The school M & O balance is $288,318.48. The Plant Facility received $31.25 from interest the Plant Facility balance is $54,497.71. The motion was moved by Jake and seconded by Jessica to approve the financial statement.

The bullying presentation by Mike Sanders was cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date after spring break. On March 17, 2017 Debbie Curry’s class traveled to Museum Of Idaho to learn about the history of Rome.

Debbie Curry proposed a Professional Development Tour for June 2018.  The tour would be in Alaska for a 10 day summer camp centered on the well-known Iditarod sled dog race.  The camp is for teachers that implement a curriculum based around the race.  Educators have found the Iditarod race to be helpful in the areas of science, math, engineering, and technology.  The website was provided to learn more about the tour. http://iditarod.com/edu/2017-summer-camp-for-teachers/.

The trustee position for the Pauline Zone #2 was up for election.  Petitions are due March 17th at 5:00 p.m. No election is required if there is only one candidate. Jake discussed the option of purchasing security cameras for the outside perimeters of school. Jake will email the final quote of cost to all board members.

April 12th is the date for Post Legislative Tour at the Shoshone Bannock Hotel & Convention Center. The individuals that will attend are Cheri Evans, Christie Evans and Robin Claunch.

Juli Fitch contacted the board in regards of a discipline issue on the south bus. The board agreed to proceed with the policy that is in place.

The next meeting will be held April 11th, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. The motion was moved and seconded to adjourn the meeting.  The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
